Cologne history is bright and interesting; it is full of legends and amazing stories. Romans were first who have noticed the territory of the future city. It was in 33 BC. A foundress of the city is Agrippina, the daughter of the commander of the Roman Emperor Augustus. Becoming the wife of Emperor Claudius, she persuaded to give the village, where she was born, the status of the colony.
The Romans brought not only the technical and military knowledge, but also Christianity. Symbol of prosperity and power of the city was a huge cathedral. Its construction began in 1248. To the 15th century Cologne became one of the wealthiest German cities. In 1794 Cologne was occupied by the French who have decided to renumber the homes according to their own system. The first perfume mixture was prepared in the city since the beginning of the 18th century and sold as a healing agent.
Cologne and the Rhine valley were annexed by the Prussian king in 1815, under their rule the city continued to flourish. In the middle of the 19th century it is turned into a major railway hub, and in 1880 the construction of the cathedral was finally completed. The end of the prosperity of the city was marked by the Second World War. Hitler's army occupied the demilitarized Rhine valley in 1936. In early 1940, German troops marched into Cologne and then moved to conquer Netherlands, Belgium and France. The most brutal bombing of this city occurred in 1945. Cologne has been turned into ruins. 90% of all buildings and bridges were destroyed. Miraculously, survived only cathedral.
Immediately after the war, people began to restore the city, trying to preserve the historical buildings of the old center. Restoring of the ancient Romance churches require the considerable efforts and resources. Despite the difficult past, Cologne again become a thriving industrial center in Europe and returned to its former beauty.
