Cologne and the Rhine valley were annexed by the Prussian king in 1815, under their rule the city continued to flourish. In the middle of the 19^th century it is turned into a major railway hub, and in 1880 the construction of the cathedral was finally completed. The end of the prosperity of the city was marked by the Second World War. Hitler's army occupied the demilitarized Rhine valley in 1936. In early 1940, German troops marched into Cologne and then moved to conquer Netherlands, Belgium and France. The most brutal bombing of this city occurred in 1945. Cologne has been turned into ruins. 90% of all buildings and bridges were destroyed. Miraculously, survived only cathedral.

Immediately after the war, people began to restore the city, trying to preserve the historical buildings of the old center. Restoring of the ancient Romance churches require the considerable efforts and resources. Despite the difficult past, Cologne again become a thriving industrial center in Europe and returned to its former beauty.
